Concrete Mix Ratio: The 1:2:3 Mix Explained
The standard concrete mix ratio is 1:2:3, meaning one part cement, two parts sand, and three parts gravel by volume, plus about half a part water. That blend cures to roughly 3,000 PSI, which covers most footings, slabs, steps, and small pads. Mix by volume using the same bucket for every part and the proportions stay honest.
I have been batching concrete by hand and by mixer for years, and the ratio is the one thing crews get wrong most often. Too much sand and the mix looks smooth but cracks. What the numbers actually mean
A mix ratio is always written cement first, then sand, then gravel (also called coarse aggregate or stone). So 1:2:3 concrete mix means:
- 1 part portland cement
- 2 parts sand
- 3 parts gravel
“Part” is a unit of volume, not weight. Use a bucket, a shovel that you fill the same way each time, or a wheelbarrow marked with a line. Concrete mixing ratio by hand
Hand mixing is fine for anything under about half a cubic yard. Past that, rent a mixer or order ready-mix, because fatigue leads to sloppy, inconsistent batches.
Here is the method I use for a 1:2:3 batch:
- Measure your dry parts into a wheelbarrow or onto a mixing board: 1 bucket cement, 2 buckets sand, 3 buckets gravel.
- Turn the dry pile over three or four times with a shovel or hoe until the color is uniform gray with no streaks.
- Pull a crater in the center and add water slowly, roughly half a part to start.
- Fold the dry edges into the water and keep turning. Add water in small splashes only as needed.
- Stop when the mix holds a ridge that slumps slightly but does not run. If it soups out, it has too much water.
The water is where hand mixing goes wrong. A good target water to cement ratio is about 0.5 by weight, which is close to half a bucket of water per bucket of cement. More water makes the mix easier to move but every extra splash drops your final strength.
Water is the strength killer
Cement gains strength through a chemical reaction called hydration, not by drying out. It only needs enough water to complete that reaction. Excess water leaves tiny voids as it evaporates, and those voids are where cracks and weakness start. A stiff mix that you have to work is almost always stronger than a wet, runny one that pours easily.
If your batch is too dry to place, add water a cup at a time. If it is too wet, add a small scoop of cement and sand in the 1:2 proportion rather than dumping in more cement alone.
Bag mixes versus site batching
Pre-blended bags (the 60 and 80 lb sacks at the store) already contain the cement, sand, and gravel in a fixed ratio, so you only add water. They are convenient for small jobs but cost more per yard. Among everyday mixes, 1:1.5:3 gives about 4,000 PSI and is used for structural columns and heavily loaded slabs. Going richer than that (more cement) tends to shrink and crack more, so 4,000 PSI is a practical ceiling for most site batching.
Is 1:2:3 good for a driveway?
It works, and 1:2:3 gives roughly 3,000 PSI, but for a driveway that will see vehicle traffic I lean toward a slightly richer 1:2:2.5 mix for around 3,500 PSI. The extra cement buys durability against freeze-thaw and wheel loads.
How much water do I add to a 1:2:3 mix?

Can I measure the ratio by weight instead of volume?
