Concrete Patio Cost Per Square Foot (With Size Examples)

Concrete Patio Cost Per Square Foot

A plain broom-finished concrete patio costs roughly 6 to 10 dollars per square foot installed at 4 inches thick. Stamped or decorative patios usually run about 12 to 20 dollars per square foot. Your local price depends on concrete prices, labor rates, site access, and how much digging and base prep the yard needs.

These are typical ranges, not a quote. Use them to set a budget, then get two or three local bids.

What makes up the cost of concrete per square foot

  • Concrete: ready-mix is priced by the cubic yard. One yard covers about 81 sq ft at 4 inches. See concrete cost per yard.
  • Labor and finishing: forming, placing, and finishing often add about 2 to 4 dollars per square foot.
  • Base prep: excavation, compacted gravel base, and hauling away soil.
  • Reinforcement: wire mesh or rebar. See rebar for a concrete slab.
  • Finish: broom finish is cheapest. Stamping, coloring, and exposed aggregate add cost.
  • Access: if a truck cannot reach the pour, a pump or wheelbarrows add labor.

DIY concrete patio cost

If you do the work yourself, you mostly pay for materials: concrete, gravel base, forms, mesh, and tool rental. A small 10 x 10 patio needs about 1.23 cubic yards, which is about 56 bags of 80 lb concrete before waste. For anything over about 1 yard, ready-mix delivery is usually easier than mixing bags by hand. Our guide on how many bags of concrete in a yard has the bag counts.

Patio thickness

4 inches is standard for patios with foot traffic and furniture. Go to 5 to 6 inches if a hot tub or heavy grill station will sit on it. Each extra inch adds about 25% more concrete. See concrete slab thickness.

Concrete patio vs other slabs

A patio costs about the same per square foot as other plain residential slabs. Driveways cost more because they are thicker and use stronger mix. Compare with concrete slab cost and concrete driveway cost.
